Q. My mum has diabetes and suffers terribly with nerve pain. What can help?

A. Acetyl-l-carnitine, in 1,000mg doses, was shown to alleviate pain and stimulate nerve fibre
regeneration in people with diabetic neuropathy, according to the results of two year-long clinical trials published in Diabetes Care.

Alpha-lipoic acid supplements have also been shown to reduce pain, burning, and other symptoms. Application of evening primrose oil may relieve pain, although no research confirms its effectiveness. Regular exercise, especially resistance exercise, improves muscle strength and pain, and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) may reduce pain from peripheral neuropathy.
